This was like a "huh?" moment for me.
I consider roaches as pests especially the large ones with wings. I'm not frightened of them just had experiences. Don't want them in our house. So why import them? Fish food? Yeah...Nah.
I lived on an old carrier for 2 years. They were a big problem especially at sea. As a rating, every 4 years you got a badge, like a stripe on your the upper arm of your uniform to a max of 3. And the roaches on the ship were rated the same. A 3 badger roach was generally the maximum size and were not uncommon. For example, we slept upon fold down metal racks mit thin mattress and there was no aircon just forced air so in the warmer climes like, 'crossing the line'. Sweat was an issue and you dared not leave a crumb of food or snack on your person as, 'cue in Jaws theme' the mongrel gutsers would find it.
To protect yourself you could take the inch wide masking tape, reverse a strip and put a bit of 'Milo' (look it up) on it. Place these stips around the rack. Roaches loved 'Milo.' and could be found stuck doing a dance on the strips next morning. Remove the strip mit roach/s and throw it over board before stowing your bunk/rack.
China bought that ship so I guess they got an illegal Aussie export of 30 million cockroaches.
