Think about how many Iranian women of this caliber and character never had a chance

Marjane Satrapi, the Iranian-French writer, illustrator and filmmaker best known for the graphic novel and Oscar-nominated animated feature Persepolis, has died at 56, relatives said, describing her death as the result of grief a little more than a year after the death of her husband, Mathias Ripa.

Something new for me. Never knew this. I'll follow this up and check out 'Persepolis'. I like new stuff.

Thanks @putnam6

Her quote I thought, was from Reagan, Bush, Clinton era, I believe, the Iranian freedom question has been there ever since 79.

Its still 2 decades old

Muslims took control, but Iran's heritage is more Persian and Kurdish till this is properly addressed, there will always be conflict there

You can't have a backwards religious tyranny intertwined in a 2026 global economy, well, you can, but you have to put up with thier bullshit.

Whether there's enough American fortitude to see it through is the only question...

“If I have one message to give to the secular American people, it’s that the world is not divided into countries. The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk together and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same.”
This comes from a Salon.com interview with Marjane Satrapi conducted by Michelle Goldberg, published on April 24, 2005 (around the time her book Embroideries was released).

It has been widely circulated online (especially on social media and quote sites) since then and resurfaced frequently after her death. Satrapi expressed similar humanist ideas about shared humanity across cultures in other interviews around that period and later, but this specific wording is tied to the 2005 Salon piece.
