Dormant volcano suddenly wakes up after 700,000 years of silence

Taftan volcano in southeastern Iran rose 3.5 inches over 10 months, signaling that it is waking up after 700,000 years of dormancy.

A volcano in southeastern Iran has nudged upward by about 3.5 inches (9 centimeters) in 10 months. This might sound like a small rise but it has big significance.
A new study used satellite data to spot the change and argues that pressure is building near the summit.
The volcano is Taftan. It has not erupted in human history, but the fresh signal says the system is stirring and needs eyes on it.

I'm no expert but I guess there are tons of these things that usually keep quiet.

Mayon Volcano in Albay logged 29 volcanic earthquakes and other seismic activities in the last 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said on Saturday.

In its 24-hour monitoring bulletin, Phivolcs said that the volcano also recorded 15 volcanic tremors which lasted for three to 53 minutes, 325 rockfalls, and one pyroclastic density current (PDC) signals or locally known as uson.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday warned of possible steam-driven eruptions at Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon due to increased seismic activity of the volcano.

Phivolcs raised the alarm after recording a total of 223 volcanic earthquakes in the 24 hours leading up to 12 a.m. on Thursday.

In an advisory, the Phivolcs said the volcanic earthquakes are caused by the movement of rocks underground, primarily happening about 2.5 kilometers deep beneath the northern part of the volcano.

The heightened seismic activity “could lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruptions” from the volcano’s summit, according to Phivolcs.

Mount Marapi Eruption Ejected Column of Ash 2,000 Meters High

The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) reported that Mount Marapi in West Sumatra Province had erupted by launching a column of volcanic ash approximately 2,000 meters above the peak.

The Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, in his statement in Jakarta, Saturday, said that the volcanic activity of the volcano with a height of around 4,891 meters above sea level was recorded at 08.42 WIB this morning.

"The observed ash column is gray with a thick intensity leaning towards the northeast. This eruption was recorded on the seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a temporary duration of one minute 25 seconds," he said.

Indonesia raises alert levels as three volcanoes erupt simultaneously

Located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, Indonesia is home to around 120–130 active volcanoes, the highest number in the world, making volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and tsunamis constant natural hazards.

Indonesian authorities have raised alert levels as three active volcanoes, including Dukono, Ibu in North Maluku, and Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara, erupted simultaneously, sending ash columns 400–500 metres above their summits.

According to Lana Saria, acting head of the Geological Agency under Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the three volcanoes are among the country's most active.

Lewotobi Laki-laki is the site of a major eruption in November 2024 that killed at least nine people, damaged more than 2,300 homes and forced around 16,000 residents to evacuate. Dukono and Ibu, meanwhile, have experienced near-continuous volcanic activity for years, regularly releasing ash into the atmosphere and remaining under heightened monitoring.
